Burning The Clocks 2008
In association with Juice 107.2FM
With thanks to our decade sponsors: University of Brighton, The Care Home Insurance Service, The Guinness Trust, Louiscomm and Tyler Accounting Services, and our regular supporters Brighton and Hove City Council
THANK YOU!
To all our sponsors, artists, volunteers and artists for all your work to create a fantastic 15th event this year and to help us celebrate same sky’s 21st birthday.

The parade looked fabulous with a multitude of flame-shaped lanterns made at our family workshops. Most of the pyramid candle lanterns were made by families at home from our kits again this year – we’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who bought a kit as this helps us to put on the event, and to congratulate them on their excellent lantern decoration.

As we decided to concentrate on the central theme of ‘Time’ for our birthday, we saw a return to a really strong selection of clock lanterns. These featured the park clocks (Blakers park, Preston Park and Queens Park) made by our volunteers, and the clock tower made by Clock Tower Sanctuary. Our sponsors made giant candle lanterns and fire dogs to become part of the finale set on the beach, and children from the Guinness Trust making clockwork mice. The parade also featured pocket watches, flying clocks, time bombs and alarm clocks.

Do visit our gallery for pictures of this years’ event - if you have any pictures you have taken that you’d like to share with us please email them to photos@burningtheclocks.co.uk.

ABOUT BURNING THE CLOCKS
Burning the Clocks is an antidote to the excesses of the commercial Christmas. People gather together to make paper and willow lanterns to carry through their city and burn on the beach as a token for the end of the year. No lantern is better for its purpose than any other, all are unique to the maker and precious but all are given up to be burnt to greet the lengthening days.

Burning the Clocks combines a family centred, workshop based, seasonal parade with a high quality fire show and fireworks for the whole city. The lantern makers become part of the show as they invest the lanterns with their wishes, hopes, and fears and then pass them into the fire. Same Sky are masters at creating new urban rituals to replace those traditional festivals that were lost in the dash to be new and non superstitious.

These new events take elements of the past…. the delight in seasons… the celebration of place and home…the giving and sharing of thoughts and wishes… and put them into a secular format that can be enjoyed by all regardless of faith or creed.

Burning the Clocks is produced with a small grant from Brighton and Hove City Council and the goodwill of local companies and individuals. The parade regularly consists of around 1,000 participants and attracts audiences of 20,000 people from the region.

If you would like to help secure this event for this and future years, we would welcome offers of support and donations. There are great benefits, such as:
association with a high profile, high quality community event, credits in attractive publicity material, press and PR opportunities, a VIP reception on the night and opportunities for your staff and their families to engage with the project (perhaps with your own lantern making workshop!).
